anyone know the best rigs to catch these fish?

Blanked last sunday at Pwllheli i was on peg 1 next to dewi who showed me how it was done by winning the champion of wales!

the rig i used was 3 long snoods cliped down with 8mm floating beads on each snood. size 6 hook.

bait rag with machrel or squid and i even had a go of using sandeel but not even the spider crabs were interested

Finally going fishing tonight - hoping for some ray from Borth and to practice casting the long traces for France.  Also trying out some of the rigs, this will be interesting if I manage to hook a ray on one!!!

Thought our trip would be scuppered - just as we were leaving work the heavens opened and a thunderstorm started.  Got home and it followed us - daughter all togged up ready to go so decided to give it a whirl anyway.  Wind was howling westerly and rain ranging from torrential to just heavy drizzle.  Still put a great surf on the beach. Had a great night on the rays - 6 rays up to 5lb 15oz between 5 of us so it was good.  Sadly my nice big juicy sandeel on a pulley rig failed to tempt one but managed to hook one on my flattie fanatic with a long trace (not the really light one thank god!) with size 4 kamasan hooks!  Put a bend in the rod thats for sure!!

We went again last night hoping for a repeat performance - not a touch, swimmers everywhere, surf not as good as the night before.  I managed a turbot (had to have one ) and Clive had a small bass  ;)  - between 8 rods that was a bit poor.

Weather is crap for the weekend again  smile/mad.gif  so it looks like back to tying hooks and making traces again.  Off to France on 15th September.  Well we only havre about 300 hooks to tie and about 100 rig bodies so we are getting there!

Lets hope its worth all this effort! Helen

This time it won't be for a lack of preparation or knowledge, lets hope the results show!  We are remarkably on target with the prepping this year - its surprising how long it takes.  But it has to be said that I can now tie mono stop knots in my sleep!  Helen

I won't hold my breath for the medals - I am hoping for about 6th place anything better is a bonus. Anyway rigs and hooks all tied - now onto plan B, the "what if" plan!!!  It is now safe to say I am sick of tying knots and getting small hooks stuck in my hands.  Helen

smile/xmadfire.gif i find the clip down rigs with long snoods a pain to make plus when you tie them with small hooks ouch smile/couto.gif

who do you think will be at they'r best in France?
hoping for 6th place? just beating the English would be goodsmile/fuck.gif

Thats the first goal!, but they managed the silver in 2001 so not an easy task by any means.  I think there will be 10 or 11 teams and we finished 9th in Portugal (beat the French!) so I think trying to achieve 6th or 7th is more realistic.  But if lady luck shines on us then a medal is a possibility - a remote one I know but I live in hope!!!  The teams from Portugal, Spain and Netherlands will be the main ones to beat I think.  South Africa could also be up there - I keep in contact with one of the girls from their team and they are great!  They normally have some awesome fishing at home and they really struggled to get their heads round light lines and small hooks in Portugal so I helped them out (without giving away too much) and we have been in touch since then.

Anyway less than 3 weeks to go - so if the wetaher holds I am going to Borth tomorrow night to keep practising with these long traces.

Quick question - whats the best way to cast out looking as if your'e belting it to the horizon when you really want it to go about 20 yards without anyone else noticing?????  Once the rod is in the sand spike then you are not allowed to move your lead unless you are reeling back in properly - does this make sense??????   Helen

, tricky question! you could cast against your clutch although if your using light main line you could snap off? you could also clip your line to the spool once you find the feeding zone, again running the risk of snapping off if using light line? or cast really high with max effort and let it land in front.
All ideas need practise to find what would work, I would prefer to cast against a light clutch without flicking over the bale arm (fixed spool) . Does anybody else have any ideas?? sure Mike might come up with something...

Casting high sounds quite good, I'll have to try that.  Not sure if the light lines would stand up to casting with a light clutch but will have to try it and see I suppose!

Its really frustrating when you know the fish are in close but you don't want to make it obvious to the other competitors what you are doing.

If this weather stays calm hopefully we can get out and practise a bit this weekend.  I have a few rigs I need to try and see how much casting they will stand up to.  All have been ok on 4oz so far but still need to try heavier weights in case the surf is really bad!  I am starting to panic now as there is only 2 weeks left and I should have been out practising at least 3 times a week and I am lucky if I get out once a week with this wind.

Thanks for the advice as always, we definately need to get the team together wehen we come back for some casting sessions if thats ok with you?  Helen

Hi H, cast like you are going for 120yrds as the line comes off just slow the line down with your finger, plus this way you will not snap off  ;) i have taken pam out to try this and it works hope this helps
